Best Time of Year to Take a Baby on Holiday (UK)

By BabyTravel UK Editorial Team · Last updated April 2026

Short answer: May, June, or September. Long answer: it depends on what matters most to you.

The best time to take a baby on holiday in the UK is shoulder season — May, June, and September. You get decent weather, far fewer crowds than peak summer, and prices that are noticeably lower. For families with babies who aren't yet in school, this is a genuine advantage worth making the most of.

Quick Answer

  • Best overall: May, June, September — warm enough, quiet enough, affordable
  • Best for guaranteed warmth: July–August, but expect crowds and high prices
  • Best for budget: March–April or October — off-peak deals, very quiet
  • Best for atmosphere: December — Christmas markets and cosy cottages
  • ⚠️ Pre-school advantage: You can travel any time of year — use it

Spring (March–May)

Spring is quietly one of the best times to travel with a baby in the UK. The countryside looks spectacular — bluebells, lambs, blossom — and most popular destinations are still quiet. Accommodation is available, prices are lower than summer, and you're not fighting for a parking space at the beach.

Weather is unpredictable in March and April, but May is often genuinely lovely. Temperatures in the south west regularly reach 17–19°C. Pack layers and waterproofs and you'll be fine. Babies don't need beach weather to have a good time — a walk through the Lake District in May sunshine is hard to beat.

Summer (June–August)

Summer is the obvious choice — warmest weather, longest days, everything is open. But for families with babies, it comes with trade-offs that are worth thinking about.

School holidays (mid-July through August) bring a significant spike in prices and crowds. Popular destinations like Cornwall can feel genuinely overwhelming at peak times. Car parks fill by 9am. Restaurant queues are long. The stuff that's manageable with a toddler becomes more stressful with a baby who needs feeding and sleeping on a schedule.

Early June, before schools break up, is a different story. You get summer-level weather with spring-level crowds. If you can go in June, do.

Autumn (September–October)

September is the other shoulder season sweet spot. Schools go back, the crowds evaporate almost overnight, and the UK in early autumn is genuinely beautiful — golden light, warm days, and a gentler pace. September temperatures in the south west often reach 18–20°C. You can still get proper beach days.

October becomes more variable weather-wise, but it's excellent value and the UK's autumnal landscapes are hard to argue with. If your baby sleeps well on the go and you're not relying on beach weather, October can be a wonderful time to travel.

Winter (November–February)

Winter travel with a baby is a different proposition entirely. Outdoor time is limited, many coastal attractions and seasonal venues close, and the days are short. That said, it's not without appeal.

Christmas markets in cities like Bath, Winchester, and Edinburgh are genuinely lovely with a baby — they're stimulating without being overwhelming, and the festive atmosphere is fun even for the tiniest visitors. Cosy self-catering cottages with wood burners are at their most appealing in January and February, and prices reflect the low demand. If your expectations are right — less outdoor, more cosy — winter can work.

The Bottom Line: Use Your Advantage

Until your child starts school, you're free to travel whenever you like. That's one of the genuine bonuses of the baby and toddler years — and shoulder season is where it pays off most. May, June, and September offer the best combination of weather, availability, and value of any time in the calendar.

FAQs

Is summer too hot for a baby on holiday in the UK?

Not usually — UK summers are mild by European standards. The main concerns are sun exposure (keep babies under 6 months out of direct sun, and use factor 50 on older babies) and overheating in the car. Plan beach visits for morning or late afternoon, and bring a good sun shade for the pram. The heat itself is rarely a problem in the UK.

When is the cheapest time to go on holiday with a baby in the UK?

January and February are the cheapest months, followed by March and November. If budget is the priority and you're flexible on weather, these months offer the best rates on cottages and hotels. You won't get beach weather, but cosy indoor breaks and city trips work well and cost significantly less than peak season.

Is it better to holiday abroad or in the UK with a baby?

Both work well. The UK has the advantage of no passport faff, no long flights, and familiar NHS backup if anything goes wrong. Abroad gives you guaranteed sun, which some families prioritise. For a first holiday especially, the UK takes a lot of the logistical complexity off the table. See our UK holiday guide for destination ideas.

What UK destinations are best for a baby in spring?

Cornwall and Devon are brilliant in May — flowers everywhere, manageable temperatures, and the beaches are peaceful before the summer rush. The Lake District is spectacular in spring and has excellent pushchair-friendly paths. The Cotswolds in April is genuinely one of the most beautiful places in England.
