Will Your Pushchair or Stroller Fit? Check Before You Fly

By BabyTravel UK Editorial Team · Last updated March 2026

Not all travel pushchairs, strollers, or buggies fit in the overhead locker. Use our free checker to see if your pushchair meets your airline's cabin size limits — or whether you'll need to gate-check it instead. We've included over 40 popular models.

Quick facts

  • Only the most compact travel strollers fit overhead — usually those folding under 55 x 44 x 20 cm
  • If your stroller is too big, gate-checking is free on virtually all airlines
  • Airlines change their policies — always verify directly before flying

Pushchair & Stroller Airline Size Checker

Enter your pushchair or stroller's folded dimensions in cm (you'll find these on the manufacturer's website or the box):

⚠️ Always verify with your airline before you fly. Cabin baggage limits can change, and policies vary by fare type, aircraft, and route. This checker is a guide only, based on standard cabin bag dimensions last verified March 2026.

What does gate-checking mean?

If your stroller is too large for the overhead locker, gate-checking is the usual alternative. You use your pushchair through the terminal and right up to the aircraft door, then hand it over to the ground crew just before you board. At the other end, it's usually waiting for you on the jet bridge as you disembark — though at some airports it goes to baggage reclaim. Either way, gate-checking is free on virtually all airlines. See our full guide to how to gate-check a stroller for exactly what to expect.

Airline cabin bag rules change more often than you'd expect. The dimensions in this checker are based on each airline's standard cabin allowance for their largest permitted bag, and were last verified in March 2026. Before you fly, check the airline's current family travel or cabin baggage page directly.

It's also worth noting that some airlines have specific stroller policies that are separate from their general cabin bag rules. Ryanair, for example, specifies their Priority boarding bag as the relevant comparison. We've used the most generous applicable limit for each airline, but your specific fare or route might differ. Always double-check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take any stroller on a plane?

You can take virtually any stroller on a plane — it just depends where it goes. Very compact strollers (folding under around 55 × 40 × 20 cm) may fit in the overhead locker. Larger pushchairs are gate-checked for free: you use it through the terminal, hand it in at the aircraft door, and collect it on the jet bridge at the other end. A handful of airlines allow strollers as hold luggage only, so always check before you fly.

What happens if my stroller doesn't fit in the overhead locker?

The crew will ask you to gate-check it. This is completely normal and happens on most flights — even with compact travel strollers, overhead lockers are often full. Gate-checking is free on all major UK and European airlines. Your pushchair is tagged, loaded into the hold, and returned to the jet bridge or baggage reclaim on arrival. See our gate-checking guide for exactly what to expect.

Is gate-checking a stroller free?

Yes — gate-checking a stroller is free on Ryanair, easyJet, British Airways, Jet2, TUI, Wizz Air, and all other major airlines operating from UK airports. The stroller is treated as baby equipment, not extra luggage. You don't need to declare it in advance in most cases, though some airlines ask you to add it when booking — check your airline's family travel page to be sure.

Which stroller is best for flying?

The Babyzen YOYO² and Cybex Coya are the smallest folding strollers that consistently pass cabin size checks on the strictest airlines (Ryanair, TUI, Emirates). The Bugaboo Butterfly, Joolz Aer+, and Silver Cross Jet are close and will pass on most airlines. If you're on a more generous airline (easyJet, BA, Jet2), you have more options — use the checker above to see your specific combination. Our cabin-friendly strollers guide goes into more detail.

Do airline cabin size limits include wheels?

Yes — when you fold a stroller, the wheels are part of it, so the folded dimensions you measure (or find on the manufacturer's website) should already include them. The dimensions quoted for each stroller in this checker are the manufacturer's folded dimensions, which include wheels and handles. If you're measuring manually, make sure you're measuring the full folded package.

Can I take a double stroller on a plane?

Very few double strollers fold small enough for the overhead locker — the Joie Evalite Duo is one exception at around 55 × 40 × 20 cm folded. Most double pushchairs are gate-checked or hold-checked. If you're flying with twins or two under two, our guide to whether you need a double stroller for travel and taking a double stroller on a plane will help you decide what to bring.
